Plymouth woman designs light-up shoes for adults

date:

August 11,2016.
A young graduate whose dazzling designs have been picked up by a leading shoe company will have her work modelled at London Fashion Week.

Billie Jacobina, who studied at Plymouth College of Art (PCA), was inspired by the sea for her vivid collection thanks to her time growing up by the coast.

Not only has the 21-year-old been scouted for her intricate designs by BEAM – a light-up shoe company for adults – she's also been selected to show her work at one of the biggest fashion weeks in the world.

Billie, who lives in Elburton, said it "doesn't feel real".

And the textile print designer, who works at The Ship Inn pub in Noss Mayo, added her work has "taken over her life".

Her shoes will be put into production in October, and will be available to buy online from BEAM's website.

"Everything I do is bright and colourful," said Billie, who did her degree at the University for the Creative Arts in Rochester. "Everything is inspired by the sea and life growing up in Devon.

"For this collection I went back to my roots, and the print I designed for it BEAM really liked, so they put them on some trainers."

Next week Billie, who went to Coombe Dean School, will be jetting off to Indonesia to start a residency, where she will be producing capsule collections to be showcased at Jakarta Fashion Week 2017.

The all-expenses paid trip is the outcome of recently winning the British Council Graduate Fashion Week International Residency Award.
